Layout Boards vs. Mats….what the heck should I use!

“Dude, I just tripped on a……..”  STOP!!!!…. Has this happened to you?  A loose piece of board causing you stress?  A darn mat bunching up and not cooperating?  Well I am here to tell you, where, when and how to determine the best ways to protect your locations best interest.  First off, you need to become ONE with the ‘floor’.  When you have reached that zenith moment, then and only then, we can now officially begin 😉

Depending on the size of your location and what is going to occur while your crew is filming there, is what type of material you are going to want to protect your floors with.

Scenario 1:  You are going to shoot a basketball scene in a basketball gym….I am going to go out on a limb and say, BOARDS PLEASE!   You will be wheeling around a bunch of equipment and everyone knows that wheeling stuff on boards is the easiest way to go.

Scenario 2: You are going to shoot a kick ass boat scene on a 110 foot yacht in Long Beach.  Hmmm, let me think….MATS PLEASE.  Let’s talk it out…..  Small crew, small narrow area to shoot in, and no wheeling of any equipment : it’s a no brainer!  Your life will be made a lot simpler on the ‘Love Boat’ with using the mat alternative.

There are pros and cons to either way you choose.  Layout boards and mats are your friends.   Layout boards have been used in the film industry since the 1950’s, can be cut to fit in any sized area, easily transported to locations and recyclable.  Mats are the ‘new kids on the block’ which look cool, and can get wet no problem.
